He believed this would help people protect liberty and prevent the abuse power amongst the government onto the people. This was extremely disliked by the monarchy and many enlighten thinkers were thrown into jail or killed for their beliefs. Lastly Voltaire a French thinker helped inspired the idea of free speech. He criticized the government and the power of the catholic church for their failure to permit religious tolerance and freedom.
