Paul belonged to the “richest” family in the neighborhood and as such he didn’t play much with the other kids in the neighborhood, instead he spent his time with their personal gardener. He, along with his parents, thought they were a cut above the rest and couldn’t bother with outsiders, instead they tended to keep to themselves and because of this Paul didn’t have any friends outside of his home. He lived in a big house and had nannies that did everything for him, so he never learned how to do chores, and as such he just sat around all day talking to the gardener gambling money. The reason he didn’t have friends or didn’t do any chores or housework is because of the family he was brought up in, they were so focused on being a cut above the rest that they didn’t focus on giving their children the skills necessary to be successful in life. His area or his environment affected how he lived his life and his pursuits in life, he did not have a dream, all he wanted to do was gamble and make money in order to help provide their mother with her superiority complex. The result of this made him not appreciate life for what it was and he was too focused on materialism that he died before he could appreciate life. Paul was surrounded by only his family and the people who worked in his house. Because of this he acted how others acted and made decisions based on what other people did. He was easily influenced by his mother about how important money was to their daily life and how they can never have enough because they are better than everyone else in their neighborhood. Paul had a toy rocking horse that he used to “find” luck, essentially after riding the horse for a long time it brought him to the luck and that luck was the names of the horses that would win the races. The only reason he got his horse to bring him to the luck was because of his mother’s urge for him to be lucky unlike his father and mother. The way he learned about gambling on horses was because his uncle lent him five pounds and his gardener taught him how to bet with it. Originally they bet with the gardeners five pounds but they lost that and as such they deemed the gardener as unlucky. When his uncle gave him the five pounds they bet it and actually won this time so they said that his uncle was lucky. After winning ten thousand pounds he decided to give his mother five thousand pounds over the next five years, one thousand pounds on her birthday every year. After her first birthday she asked her lawyer if she could claim all the money at once due to their debt, Paul was easily pressured into saying yes and as a consequence to
