A Rose for Emily by Faulkner is a story about a lady called Emily who the town people felt sorry for her and even organized to be paying for her taxes. Emily is a mystery to the town as she does not interact with the town people most times. Her father dies, and later the lover she was dating disappears. In a Rose for Emily by Faulkner Emily’s house is described as ‘stubborn and coquettish decay.' The terms used in describing the house mean that the house was in poor condition and most people found it haunting. Emily did not want it to be renovated and be reinstated to its previous state; white and decorated. Nevertheless, the house is an old family home. The house symbolizes the life, Emily. Emily lost her family, and despite the town people trying to help her by paying her debt, she is not willing to make an effort and change her life. Just like the decaying house, Emily dies a lonely death despite the townspeople effort to help her. However, in the ‘the yellow wallpaper by Perkins the writer's house is in an isolated areas, and despite it being in a lonely location it is beautiful. The house has many ‘locks, ' and the writer's bedroom is barred. The house symbolizes the writer's situation; the writer has a beautiful life with a family and a husband that adores her. However, the people that care about her have restricted her life in that she cannot engage in writing as they believe that it will propel her illness. Her husband and family have separated from the rest of the world by making her ‘rest' so that she can be able to recover swiftly. Symbolism has been used to express the feelings of characters towards situations that they may not freely speak about. For example, color yellow has been used in both stories to symbolize hope and freedom. In the story, a Rose for Emily by Faulkner every time Emily is in the company of Homer they ride in a yellow buggy and Homer has yellow gloves. The color signifies Emily’s hope that she will be happy with Homer contrary to the town people belief. In the story of the yellow wallpaper by Perkins, the writer lives in a room that is covered with yellow wallpaper. She spends time figuring out the pattern of the paper until she realizes that it stands for her hope in gaining her freedom. She gains courage and peels the wallpaper from the wall saying; she is free. Even though both stories leave the readers in a suspense condition using the symbolism present in the stories it is possible for the readers to be able to predict what happened
