Two pieces of art that I chose to compare and contrast would be, “Starry Night”, by Vincent Van Gogh and, “Road to Happiness”, by Victor Figol. These two paintings share characteristics and qualities that are alike and that differ. “Starry Night”, by Vincent Van Gogh, is a post-impressionist oil painting that was finished in 1889. This piece of art displays the beautiful night sky out of a window at an asylum where Vincent Van Gogh spent the last of his later life. He was able to spend hours contemplating the stars without interference from gas or electric city street lights, which were increasingly in use by the late nineteenth century. This style of art responds to the emotion of the artist. This type of art reflects the symbolic and personal meanings behind the art that connects viewers to incorporate its value. Post-impressionism also emphases, particularly using oil paints, abstract form and pattern in presentation to the surface of a canvas. The other form of art that I chose to decrypt is, “Road to Happiness”, by Victor Figol. “Road to Happiness”, is a post-modern art that was dated unknown. Figol was born in 1958 and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1985. This art piece is presented with oil paint illustrating a couple walking down a well-lit path towards the bright abyss of the night. There is slight information from Figol and even less information from his art. Therefore, his art work was published in the 1900’s, regarding his date of birth and completion of school. Post-modern art is a style of art around the date of 1980’s- present. This type of art depicts the movement of multimedia, conceptual, intermedia, and installation art. In other words, this art is an example of a wide range of categories synthesized with contemporary art.
