Compare and Contrast

My compare and contrast will be on the Basilica of St. Sernin in Toulouse and one of the most famous Islamic sites, the Dome of the Rock. I will be comparing what similarities and what differences these two great buildings have to one another.

Let’s start with the differences, since these two buildings will probably have a lot. With the Basilica of St. Sernin we find that the floor plan is made to resemble a cross, where the Dome of the Rock has an octagon shaped outer wall. The entrance of the Basilica of St. Sernin has two arched entrances which are sunken in where in the Dome of the Rock the entrances are popped out with 2

The roofs are lined with corbels carved with human and animal figures. The Dome of the Rock on the other hand has its exterior covered with beautiful multicolored Turkish tiles which are copies of its original Persian tiles.

Now let’s focus on the similarities of these great buildings. The first and main similarity that came to mind was that the Basilica of St. Sernin is a place of worship, and now the Dome of the Rock is used for a mosque which is what muslins call their churches. The other notable similarity is the fact that both buildings have a part of the building going up. The Basilica of St. Sernin has a tower and the Dome of the Rock has its center, the dome, going up as well, kind of like a tower. The third similarity is that these two buildings are focal points of their city. The Basilica of St. Sernin is a great focal point for the city of Toulouse, France, and as we all know the Dome of the Rock is located on the Temple Mount of Jerusalem, which is one of the most famous cities in the world. Another observation that I noticed was that both the Basilica of St. Sernin and the Dome of the Rock have pillars and arches on the inside and on the outside of the buildings. Both of these buildings also have great detail on the inside. The Basilica of St. Sernin has beautiful capital (268 to be exact), and great medieval frescoes. The Dome of the Rock has a great cupola which features beautiful
