Whiteness is known as the quality or state of being of a light colored skin. As whiteness can be found in several locations, most individuals of the white race have shown to be of an individualistic culture, especially in the United States (Tranby & Hartmann, 2008). According to Whiteness experts, there are three main characteristics that many white people in the United States share. The three characteristics include, “an advantage of race privilege, a standpoint from which White people view themselves, others, and society, and a set of cultural practices, largely unrecognized by White people” (Martin & Nakayama, 2014, p. 118). Typically, individuals of the whiteness culture in the United States speak English. Members of the Whiteness culture are a little less touchy towards people than members of the deaf culture, as many whites feel as if too much touching of another person can be deemed as disrespectful or crossing a boundary. According to Internet research, many individuals have differing perspectives on their culture of Whiteness. Just to provide an example, a some whiteness individuals were interviewed on what they perceive whiteness to be in comparison to other cultures such as African American. According to research, “The traditional cultural values that influence the psyche of the Chinese people are harmony, benevolence, righteousness, courtesy, wisdom, honesty, loyalty, and filial piety” (Lihua, 2013, p. 1). Individuals of the Chinese culture have very strict rules of proper etiquette, more so than those of the whiteness and deaf culture. Many of these rules are based off the common religion practiced in China, which is Confucianism. Different from those of the Whiteness and Deaf cultures, individuals of the Chinese culture place a strong value on women being subordinate to men. Moreover, while the Chinese culture speaks the language of Chinese, it is not common for them to be as touchy towards strangers as are the deaf
