Sonny and his brother have much in common. They both grew up in Harlem and they both were dealing with depression. However, how they both dealt with depression differs. Sonny chose to deal with depression by consuming heroin to control his feelings. In addition, Sonny also chose to become a musician in order to express his feeling. His Brother, name not given, chose a differ path which instead of escaping, he integrates himself into his environment. Moreover, he becomes an algebra teacher to fit in.
