What Americans refer to as soccer is called football in other parts of the world. In America, soccer and football are viewed as two different sports. Soccer and football have some similarities, but also have some differences. While soccer is not as popular in the United States, it is a favorite sport for the rest of the world. Over two-hundred and forty million people around the globe participate in soccer frequently according to the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). What we modernly refer to as soccer in America is much older than football.
Histories trace the origin of soccer back further than 2,000 years ago to China (The History of Soccer). The English are given the credit for recording the first official rules for the soccer. As soccer progressed developed, more rules were developed. For example, the penalty kick came into play in 1891. The game was conducted under the London Football Association rules. Contrasting to soccer, there were 25 players on each side, not the typical 11.
