What Americans refer to as soccer is called football in other parts of the world. In America, soccer and football are viewed as two different sports. Soccer and football have some similarities, but also have some differences. While soccer is not as popular in the United States, it is a favorite sport for the rest of the world. Over two-hundred and forty million people around the globe participate in soccer frequently according to the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). What we modernly refer to as soccer in America is much older than football.
Histories trace the origin of soccer back further than 2,000 years ago to China (The History of Soccer). The English are given the credit for recording the first official rules for the soccer. As soccer progressed developed, more rules were developed. For example, the penalty kick came into play in 1891. According to the article “The History of Soccer”, the red and yellow cards were introduced during the 1970 World Cup final. Rugby alone developed from traditional soccer, so soccer is the foundation for American football. Before football officially developed as its own sport, many colleges and university just played a mixture of rugby and soccer. According to “Football Origins, Growth and History of the Game’ the game between Princeton and Rutgers is identified as the first college football game, which occurred on November 6, 1869 in New Jersey (Pearson). The game was conducted under the London Football Association rules. Contrasting to soccer, there were 25 players on each side, not the typical 11.
