Symbolism In Snow White

When Disney released its first animated film, “Snow-White and the Seven Dwarves”, it became an instant classic. Since then, the cheery chirpy version of the story is what has stayed in the hearts and minds of young readers. The story is based off of the Grimm Brother’s version of the tale; although by no means the oldest version of the story, it is the most popular version known by readers today. However, although the image of the Disney version is bright, even the cleaned up version written by the Grimm Brothers is significantly darker than what most people might have in mind when they think of “Snow-White”. One of these darker elements is the nature of the mother-daughter relationship represented in the story as it portrays the mother-daughter relationship as a power-struggle between a young, beautiful girl and a cunning, jealous mother figure. In the Grimm’s “Snow-White”, symbolism is used to suggest that this relationship is the defining component of Snow-White’s overall coming-to-age. Her step-mother, as the mature woman, has fading beauty, lost youth, stolen innocence, and only bitterness left in her heart. While the relationship between the mother and daughter seems to be portrayed as a power struggle between the two women, it doesn’t seem that there is any true struggle at all. “An archetype provides a window into a society’s attitudes and values” Throughout history, the purpose of fairy tales has shifted from pure male entertainment to didactic children's tales. A particular time period's values are evident through analysis of archetypes found in fairy tales from that era. This theory is explored through the Brothers Grimm fairy tale "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (SWSD) originally published in 1812, Matt Phelan's film noir style graphic novel "Snow White" published in 2016 but set in the 1920s, and Robert Stromberg's modern appropriation of Sleeping Beauty, the feature film "Maleficent" released in 2015. In each of these texts, the archetypes of the villain and heroine have shifted in order to adapt to the changes…

Catharsis, and the overall narrative of the art of Greek Tragedy, has always played an immense part in the storytelling of the horrific within the Disney filmography, ever since their first feature-length film venture in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). As a form of dramatic release, catharsis is best described as a form of tragedy that “…brings recognition of who and what we are.” (Rorty, 1992), and “…provides us with the appropriate objects towards which to feel pity or fear." (Lear, 1998, 196). Such a metaphor is held hand in hand with the treatment of Disney’s child audience who views such themes.…

The story of Snow White remains a standout amongst the most popular children's stories in the world, first related in 1812 when the Grimm brothers distributed their accumulation of tales that assembled from old European folk stories. Due to their horrific origins brimming with complex notions concerning the principles of morality, Disney has opted to grant us diluted renditions of the original tales. These watered-down, kid-friendly interpretations where good overcomes evil, the insidious get rebuffed, and the honorable live happily ever after insinuate hope that one can accomplish a constructive task by changing oneself and the world around them. This paper will compare and contrast the films Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman to…

For a long time people have been using fairytales to teach valuable life lessons. Naturally there are many different accounts of each fairytale, but the majority of people usually divide them between the traditional and modern versions. Referring to the traditional often means the harsh lesson connected to the works by The Brothers Grimm while modern refers to the happy animated Disney interpretations. Looking past the differences in how The Brothers Grimm and Disney like to mood their stories they both share the similar themes of what jealousy and cruel acts can lead to, the envy of the evil Queen in Snow White, the rage and vanity of Gothel in Rapunzel, and the greed of Cinderella’s stepmother and sisters; however, there seems to be a controversy…

In the version that most people are familiar with ,which is the Disney version Snow White and the seven Dwarfs ,Snow White is the fairest of them all and the Evil Queen does not like that one bit. The main idea of the whole story revolves around the idea of beauty and jealously. The Grimm Brothers version of Snow White is quite similar to Disney’s version however, it does throw us a few curve balls.…

The use of nature can be instrumental in conveying the symbolic meaning, but it also helps to establish the setting in several stories. Commonly, the author’s use of nature serves a dual purpose within the story, which aids in potentially forming a wide array of interpretations for readers. In the short story Chicxulub, the narrator compares the impact he felt when he received news of his daughter being involved in a potentially fatal accident, to asteroid and meteor strikes Chicxulub and Tunguska.…

The sexualization of female characters still play a prominent role in the media. That women will always be the main subject of beauty. Some feminists might argue that women should embrace their beauty, which is a good idea. However, it is quite difficult to do so when the beauty standards are ridiculously high. By comparing these brief summarize of the two tales, it is apparent that in the Grimm’s version, Snow White’s beauty portrays her as naïve and thoughtless, (easily accepting the apple from the “elder woman”), often seen as a sign of weakness.…
