Differences between villains and victims can vary in each play, movie, or book. Can a person be a victim and also be a villain? Is Shylock a villain or victim In the play Merchant Of Venice written by William Shakespeare two moneylenders Antonio and Shylock both have a feud with each other over money. Antonio a borrows money from shylock the jewish moneylender for his best friend Bassanio. Shylock and Antonio made an agreement that if the money was not paid back on time plus interest Shylock could take a pound of flesh from Antonio. Towards the end of the play the money was not paid back in the three months and they went to court where Shylock planned to take Antonio’s heart. Shylock only seemed to want his money back. He kept saying, “Oh my jewels my ducats!” but did not seem to care about Jessica. He wished she was dead with his jewels in her ears. Then, he just took all of his anger out on Antonio. He just lost everything he had left in his life. His servant left, his daughter left. She stole all of his money, jewels, and jewelry. She sold his ring from his late wife Leah to buy a monkey which was the last straw for Shylock. According to Salonio, Shylock said, “My daughter! oh , my ducats! oh my daughter! fled with a christian! oh my christian ducats! Justice! the law! my ducats and my daughter! a sealed bag, two sealed bags of ducats, of double ducats, stol’n from me by my daughter! and jewels, two stones, two rich and precious stones, stol’n by my daughter! justice! find the girl! she hath the stones upon he and the ducats”(2.8.15-23). Shylock was in the streets screaming about his money not caring that his daughter ran away to marry a christian. Shylock says that he wishes Jessica was dead with his jewels in her ears proving how he is portrayed as a villain. Not only is Shylock being a heartless villain when it comes to Jessica, but he refused to show Antonio any mercy in the court case, proving once again he is a …show more content…
He would not show Antonio any mercy during the court case by saying he wants the flesh from his heart and denying all of the other offers that were made to him. After the Duke asked Shylock why is he hoping for mercy when he renders none Shylock says, “What judgement shall I dread, doing no wrong? You have among you many purchased slave, which, like your asses and your dogs and mules, You use in abject and in slavish parts, Because you bought them… The pound flesh which I demand of him is dearly bought, Is mine and I will have it”(4.1.89-93.99-100). During the court case he was asked to show mercy, but he refused. He says he pretty much bought the flesh and will get it no matter what. Shylock is willing to do anything to get a pound of flesh even if it means killing Antonio showing how evil he can really be.
