Compare And Contrast Sexism And Ultimate Frisbee

Improved Essays
Sexism and ultimate frisbee have almost nothing in common, except for I would most likely be better off without both of them. Evidently, I have never been fond of either of issues. However, in my sophomore year of high school, when my gym teacher placed me on an ultimate frisbee team of all boys, the two suddenly became a force to be reckoned with. Usually, I’m, at most subpar at sports, especially ones that involve discs flying towards my face; I have many skills, but hand eye coordination is not one. Being the honest person that I am, I explained my inability to play ultimate frisbee ‘well’ to my teammates. However, I expected them to at least somewhat include me in the game. When they didn’t, I was frustratingly but naively assumed that all reasoning found its roots in my obvious lack of hand-eye coordination. …show more content…
That philosophy held true until I overheard one of the other boys on my team blatantly talking about my body and my gender limited sports skills. I was utterly furious, to assume that because of my gender, and not because of my lack of coordination, that I couldn’t play sports was offensive. Every woman has a million different stories about times when they were treated as less than a man, and I am no different. Still, I had never been so affronted by sexism before. I was determined to prove all who doubted my skills, which there was only a minute amount to doubt in the first place, wrong. I forced myself to become an active player, and gave more than my best effort. Even though, I had doubted my skills to begin with, I eventually became a valuable team player. Ironically, this backfired on me as I ended up gaining a reputation as an amazing ultimate frisbee player. I knew that my skills were rooted in my determination to prove sexism wrong. Therefore, I decided to end my ultimate frisbee

Sports have captivated humans since the beginning of time, games that involve hard work, strategy and athleticism; games that have been considered manly and dominated by man. Why is it that females were given the short end of the straw once again? Beginning in Greece women were not allowed to participate in the Olympics, for over thousands of years women were still not able to compete until 1990. Stereotypes of women in sports carry over into the Olympics, professional sports, school sports, and helps us understand how women athletes, transgender athletes and mother athletes have rose to the challenge and broke the stereotypes. Persuasive Essay There has been a lot of controversy over whether or not girls should or should not be able to play on boys sports teams. This has been a growing topic throughout the United States due to the growing factor of women’s equality. There are a lot of things that become risks when you throw girls in the mix with boys, which is why I believe that girls should not be allowed to play on the boy’s sports teams. I believe this statement for a number of reasons, but there is one that stands out to me more than any other. This is true also in the sports arena regarding respect for the female gender. Society judges the role that women play in “masculine” sport activities and reflects the roles of women when they are outside of their playing field (Flanagan 2). Consequently, many women do not want to play the sport, fearing they might be called a lesbian or homosexual. Society needs to…

Sports should be seen as a competition of all gender and not a single gender sport. There are some sports organizations that separated the male and female into two different associations. For example, WNBA, which is Woman’s National Basketball Association as opposed to NBA, which is National Association Basketball. Some people believe that a female doesn’t have the same talent as a male does.…

Many people’s opinions across the world have been that women are too fragile to play in male dominate sports. This unequal…

Girls and boys get injured in sport, whether they are playing against or with athletes of the same sex or not. To the extent that factors such as height, weight or strength pose safety concerns, steps can be taken under existing law to equitably address that risk based on those particular characteristics, rather than resorting to preconceived and stereotypical assumptions about whole genders”(Terry). This shows how men and women should be able to play on the same team and that we are strong enough and have the same or better skill than men. Gender shouldn’t matter and neither should strength because women can be just as strong as men. It will take more effort, but it can be accomplished.…

It is rare to see a slim, hour glassed shaped, D-cup, and round butted woman walking along the streets of the city. Not all women act like helpless princesses, waiting for their prince charming to sweep them to safety. Also, it is illegal to sexually or violently harass anyone of any gender. However, in many games, the law, and logic does not apply to the virtual NPCs (non-playable character). Objectification and sexual abuse toward women existed for a long period of time, as it was used to attract male consumers.…

The issue of gender equality is one that is still extremely prevalent in today’s society and culture. Despite societal attempts to reprimand derogatory behavior or comments that promote sexism, scandals such as the Harvard men’s soccer team’s ‘scouting report’ show that the problem still remains. Many males still view women in a negative way and feel a sense of superiority over them. This explains how events such as the Harvard men’s soccer scandal could have happened. Although there is no excuse for the inferior attitudes men sometimes place on women, I believe that predetermined biological, social, and cognitive factors that have been so heavily inflicted throughout the lifespan have made this behavior accepted and, in most cases, the social…
