The Roman Republic/Empire once had the strongest army in the world with many great accomplishments, including defeating Hannibal and his army. When the decline began Rome’s army was significantly weakened and frankly neglected by the Government: “One thing is clear, however. Weakened by a shortage of manpower, the Roman Empire in the west simply not able to fend off hoards of people invading Italy and Gaul.”. If more attention or funding was given to the military it was very possible that the army could have fending off these invaders as it was once able too. Similarly, the Han Dynasty was not able to keep out invaders because of how little attention they gave to their armies: “The Han also continued to have problems with the Xianguo beyond the Great Wall to the North. Professional armies recruited from non-Chinese peoples along the peripheries of the Empire proved to be unreliable in both performance and loyalty.”. The army that the Han managed was not strong enough to fight off these invaders and even hiring a private army did not do the task for the Han. If the Han had focused on their existing army in the first place there would have never been a need to bring in external forces, which were both expensive and unsuccessful.
Although the Han Dynasty and Roman Empire were constructed very differently, they both had corrupt Governments
