Hughes poem, both show similarities through the novel and poem. The Rite of Passage by Richard Wright is about a fifteen year old boy named Johnny who lives in New York and starts out with a good life and a good family, but finds out devastating news that his family is a foster family. He ends up running away, because he has to leave his family and be sent somewhere else. He runs away and goes on the streets where he learns about living life the hard way. Whereas the poem “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes is about a mother who's suffered many challenges, but still does not give up. She leaves this poem for her son to tell him how life has many difficulties, but he should be able to not give up. One similarity, would be the characters in The Rite of Passage and “Mother to Son have a tough time in life. Johnny in The Rite of Passage suffers a tough time on the streets.
