Thank you for your post. I agree with you: that the risk ratio is just that: a risk and not the actual disease. Another way that these two measures differ is in the usage: while odds ratio are mainly used in case control studies, RR are used in cohort studies ( Lachin & Ebrary, 2011). Relative risk is used on cohort studies to investigate if exposure to a treatment or lifestyle choice affects the risk of a disease or outcome. What this finding would mean is that out of 100 perfectly identical attacks, statistically the adversaries would win 83 of those attacks. Stated differently, a risk value of 0,8272 means the PPS fails 83% of the time and successfully defeats or “neutralizes” the attack only 17% of the time.…

The three risk factors that Mary is influenced by are her physical disability (legally blind), low-income status and lack of affordable housing in the city of Hamilton. In order to enhance her protective factors I would aim to increase the monthly payments set out by Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) with the expectation that it would decrease the risk factors that she is experiencing. For example, Mary is legally blind and this prevents her from being able to work. In the case study, Mary receives nine-hundred and seventy-five dollars from ODSP each month. Her income received from this program is not enough to cover the costs of rent, hydro, food and other basic necessities.…

Healthcare Rationing As US healthcare costs increase, there is a concern as to how to protect our medical resources against frivolous spending, while providing the best medical attention possible, to the greatest number of individuals. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 has attempted to use market forces as an allocation solution that will determine who receives medical care and on what terms. While the rationing system is widely supported, it has had a devastating effect on the quality and quantity of care received by the elderly and impoverished, and poses serious questions concerning what does it mean to have quality of life and who is entitled to live a long life with access to healthcare. What is the basis for rationing healthcare: age,…

I noted the way B.L.’s eyes lit up as she talked about her children or her accomplishments and how she looked downcast when talking about her health. It usually happened when she performed her life review. According to David Haber, life review is a structured evaluative process where one looks at their life events and finds meaning in those events. Haber added, “A life review is typically structured around one or more life themes, most often family themes—ranging from one’s own childhood, to the experience of being a parent, to being a grandparent; and work themes—from first job, to major life’s work, to retirement” (Haber, 2006). The difference between life review and remembering is that a life review is a comprehensive view of one’s life…
