Compare And Contrast Relative Dating And Radiometric Dating

Improved Essays
Relative dating and radiometric dating are two different things used for the same purpose. This purpose is to determine the age of fossils and other geological features. Radiometric uses radioactivity while relative uses location of the fossil or feature in rock layers. Although radiometric is more accurate than relative, relative dating is easier, quicker, and is the oldest way. These two ways are some of the common ways but not the only ways. There are also methods like carbon dating and absolute dating. Some people believe in the Bible which describes the earth being created but never mentions a time so no one knows how long ago it actually happened. Other people do not believe in the Bible and try to use scientific methods to uncover the time of the Earth's creation but one thing holds true between both is that dating can help uncover this secret but they are not the only ones. There are more ways to date fossils such as radiocarbon dating, carbon …show more content…
In many ways relative dating is easier and quicker than radioactive dating but radioactive dating is a much more accurate way. Relative dating uses material such as rocks and fossils and attempts to place that material in a certain time based on where it was located and the rock around it. The time where the rock or fossil came from is based on times like the Jurassic period and other sections like that. Geologists use cross cutting as a method of relative dating by determining which rock sections came from where then putting all rocks and fossils found in that area into one group. The layers are like a sandwich with the top bread being the youngest group and the bottom bread being the oldest group. This is an example of The Principle of Superposition. As species have come and gone many have left behind fossils and remains from certain times but them seem to disappear in another while others suddenly seem to pop up with no records of fossils from before

Ian Miller is a Paleontologist who works for the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Ian Miller’s problem is that he wants to find out how Western North America changed from the past 100 million years, what past climates were like 100 million years ago and the fossil ecosystems that existed 100 million years ago. Through solving and studying this problem, there have been many obstacles to solving his questions. Although obstacles causes trouble and hardships through experiments and test, Ian Miller has been patient with his research, uses what he has to solve questions, and enjoys his findings to make him not stop researching (DMNS). Ian Miller has experimented with many findings and has found many things.…

Recently, scientists have discovered fossils of an extinct species of turtles that particularly have snouts as noses, similar to a pig. However, because of its snout, it was named Golden's bacon turtle, or Arvinachelys golden. Usually, turtles have one nasal passage in their skulls because of how fleshy their nostrils are. Arvinachelys golden was found by a team from Natural History Museum of Utah and discovered the fossil at the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. In addition, this turtle also had a near completed forelimb, partial hindlimbs, and vertebrae from the neck and tail, unlike any other turtle ever recorded.…

Some of this information that we believe to be true may be totally incorrect but due to limitations, archaeologists have not been able to figure it out or not recognising any mistakes made. This is why work is constantly done on sites to make sure the correct information is extracted to make the right conclusions about certain things that are not given to archaeologists. This takes a lot of time and effort from archaeologists and historians. The particular sources researched are not always helpful.…

Before Christopher Columbus “discovered” America in 1492, discoveries have recently found proof of inhabitants as early as 12,021 B.C.. However, the most widely accepted theory regarding early immigration to the Americas involves the Bering land bridge, a piece of land that once connected Alaska and Siberia. However, the land bridge theory, or Clovis theory, dates back to only 10, 984 B.C., almost 1,000 years after humans have been known to occupy North America. Two alternate theories are called the “Monte Verde” and “Kennewick Man” theories, allow me to explain. Tom Dillehay, and American anthropologist, was studying the Monte Verde site, Chile, in 1979.…

Forensic Carbon-14 Dating is a carbon dating system that is used to identify the age of unknown remains for anthropological and archaeological purposes. To help determine the year of death, Forensic Anthropologist use radiocarbon and inject them in to the soft tissues found inside the bone. Mainly soft tissues that are used for this advanced technology are found in hair, fingernails, and blood. The radiocarbon levels found in these three biological components give the most accurate time of post mortem due to these match identically to the contemporary…

Bones found in the archeological dig belonged to cattle, oxen, mule, and a bear (Hardesty). The larger bones showed signs of impact (fractures) and looked like they were sawed, indicating marrow extraction for consumption. The smaller pieces of bone were burnt and calcined (oxidized or reduced) due to low oxygen burning (which occurs at the bottom of a fire) (Hardesty). Larger bone fragments were submitted to a radioimmunoassay (a method to determine proteins in bones and then match them to a certain species (Lowenstein)).…

In God We Trust Modern day chronological dating is founded on time before and after Christ. Creationism is a religion that millions of people follow and worship based on personal belief, evolution is a science that has been studied and supported-at least, that is what many scientists, atheists, and even religious affiliates believe. An uprising in the highly debated topic as to if creationism and evolution should be taught in publicly funded schools creates a line of progressivists versus Darwin advocates who each have their own set of presumptions on what should be taught and where. On one side, Creationists are arguing that creationism is an alternative to evolution and should be taught so that children are not put on a one track train to…

One method often used to date objects is radiocarbon dating, which works by comparing isotopes of carbon and their half-lives. This is an especially accurate method because it is unfazed by chemical, temperature, and physical changes so the timing will be correct no matter what. Another form of dating is using soil, sediment, or peat build-up. Since the build-up of these materials occurs in chronological order if undisturbed, it can show a timeline of objects and events. It can also show environmental events like fires to give an idea of what the climate might have been like and if there were any significant weather events.…

Modern Archeologists have a range of different non-intrusive archeological survey techniques available to them when locating and interpreting a site for excavation. These techniques prove useful in locating sites before any excavation is needed and can also assist during the excavation process. They help bring many mediums of data together to make a clear report of the archeological site and any finds that lead from that. The techniques include but are not limited to, looking at historic maps, aerial photography, LiDAR, analytical survey, field walking and geophysics and Geographical Information System (GIS). All of these techniques are useful to an archeologist however, they all have varying degrees of expense, financially, in manpower and…
