Little hints suggesting of a darker theme are dispersed throughout the beginning half of the story using foreshadowing. One of the first examples of this is the name of the island which Rainsford and Whitney are passing, dubbed Ship Trap Island by superstitious sailors who have a “curious dread of the place”. The sinister tone of the name and the aversion the sailors seem to have towards it instantly makes the reader suspicious, however Rainsford dismisses the stigma surrounding the island as ridiculous. Later, when swimming towards the island, he hears a “high screaming sound, the sound of an animal in an extremity of anguish and terror” followed by a pistol shot. Rainsford has hunted every animal known to man, so it is unsettling that he does not recognize this one.…

He didn’t want to take part in the hunt, but he knew he had to do whatever it took to defeat Zaroff because he didn’t want to die such a shameful death, but more importantly, beat Zaroff at his own game. Trying to maintain his civility, Rainsford had to play Zaroff’s game in order to survive. This conflict between man versus man was very tense. Both men wanted to deem themselves as the ultimate hunter and did whatever they could to win the hunt. Deer hunting is a great sport I love the excitement and the rush that you get from an animal. I am always looking to improve on techniques for being quiet when the deer are approaching my stand I like to stand when a deer is coming than sitting down because it gives me more room and I can pull my bow a lot easier than sitting down. But some hunters like to sit down so they don’t scare the deer away, but I think it’s more of a challenge to do. First and foremost, General zaroff is a better hunter when comparing to rainsford because he has more experience of hunting, he always embraces challenges and he is an insensitive character. On the other hand, Rainsford does not carry any of these qualities because he is much younger, is not always ready to accept such challenging obstacles and he is less insensitive than Zaroff. General Zaroff is a more skilled hunter than Rainsford because he simply has more experience of hunting than Rainsford does. To be more specific in the story, Zaroff states that he is a cossack on page 41. A cossack is “a person belonging to any of certain groups of Slavs living chiefly in the southern part of Russia in Europe and forming an elite corps of horsemen”.…
