Racism And Racism Similarities

Improved Essays
Until recently races were believed to have biological differences, however now people know that is no longer true. Unfortunately, people still judge others of different color by stereotyping them, which then leads to prejudice or racism. Racism starts out in every person 's’ head and depending on how they act on it can form a socioeconomic gap between races. Thus not allowing the same access to sports equipment or fields and causing certain sports to be dominated by a certain race since they do not have equal opportunities to well paid jobs.
Racism and Prejudice are both very similar and very different. The similarity between the two is that they both have opinions on race and/or religion that are different from their religion or race. The

Before the civil rights movement people of color were not allowed to own land and were believed to have “show[n] limited intelligence, had few ambitions and ‘their brains [did] not seem to work as rapidly as…the brains of English speaking pupils,’” (Iber 969). This was because they were not offered the same opportunities. Whites were, therefore were working for whites all instead of learning. Since they did not own any land of their own they had to rely on White owners and that was the only way to make money to survive. Once the workers had children, the children also had to help make money to live so there was no time for school. Without working they would have no money to survive so the cycle continued on. Even after the civil rights movement people of color were still not offered the same opportunities because of the inner city location. Once they were allowed to own land, they were put into poor neighborhoods with other people of color. And just like the cycle before the civil rights movement most colored people were stuck trying to make sure they had enough money for their families. Since this has been common throughout the past decade it has created a stereotype that certain races are good at a certain sport. One example is how Blacks are amazing at basketball, but Whites are amazing at golf. The reason that these sports have been predominated by these races is because of the access. If people look into a poor part of a city they will mostly see rundown buildings and cement. In this area there is no room for a golf course, so instead the children in the area have to use objects as their baseball field, their hands as their gloves, and a flat surface with a net to play basketball. While in the suburban areas where mostly white people live there is plenty of room for a golf course and access to golf clubs. However, today it is gradually beginning to change, the “inaccuracy of stereotyping Spanish-surnamed athletes solely as peloteros (baseball players),”(Iber 971) is no longer as common. Now Spanish surnamed athletes play football and basketball more than before (Iber). There still is a big difference between sports and even inside of sports. An example is football. When people look at the positions they see white quarterbacks and black tacklers, because it used to be believed that Whites had more strategy and blacks were more aggressive. Although today there are a few black quarterbacks, so the stereotype is gradually decreasing people still need to

All throughout time, people have been divided due to their differences. People who see others that are different from them will often immediately decide that they are “weird” and put those people lower than themselves. According to Linda Holtzman and Leon Sharpe in their passage, “Theories and Constructs of Race,” Race is just a social construct made by humans to exclude people based on what they look like, where they are from, their culture, etc. If scientists were to look at someone’s deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) compared to another person with, say, different colored skin, they would notice that there is not much of a difference between the two people. Therefore, as Holtzman and Sharpe say, “race is constructed socially, culturally, politically,…
