Pre - Columbian civilizations, also known as the Mesoamerican Indians, inhabited Mexico and Central America, between the 14°N and 22°N latitude lines. This land was a complex of indigenous cultures, but it mostly was composed of three different linguistic groups; the Mayan, Oto Manguean and Uto-Aztecan. The Mesoamerican civilization was characterized by kingdoms and empires, such as the Incas and Aztecs. They were also characterized by their cities, monuments, arts and writing. All this changed in 1492. Christopher Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain in search for the Northwestern passage that should have given him a more efficient and direct way to the orient.
