The long lasting argument between people of all ages and races, around the world…are poor people targeted and accused of being the cause of obesity? Though many articles, nutritionist, dietitians, and studies have shown poverty is the leading cause of obesity across the world. Poverty is the leading cause of Obesity. When living in a low income area healthy foods are too expensive to purchase and many cities and towns in low income areas have hazardous environments for the families to be able to partake in physical activities. The under privileged are unable to obtain the mount of physical activity that is needed. “Lower income neighborhoods have fewer physical activity resources than in higher income neighborhoods… making it difficult to lead a physically active lifestyle”( Why Low-Income and Food). These neighborhoods with less physical opportunities are more likely to stay at home and be exposed to weight gain. Without access to parks and playgrounds like the wealthier and safer neighborhoods, these neighborhoods struggle to keep friends and family safe. The article,Why Low-Income and Food, points out, “crime, traffic, and unsafe playground equipment are common barriers to physical activity in low-income communities. These safety concerns cause children and adults to be more likely to stay inside and engage in sedentary activities.” These issues prohibit the proper physical activity that is needed to stay healthy. Many people try going to the gym to lose the weight they have gained from sitting around. Although, gyms are helpful they often cost a large amount of money and time; low income families lack both time and money in impoverished neighborhoods. U.S. “Department of Agriculture conducted a study that insists you do not have to spend more money by being healthier. One USDA study found that if you are eating 2,000 calories from breakfast to bedtime; to consume all the vegetables and fruit you need for $2 to $2.50 a day”(William) Being healthy does not mean spending more money. Nanci Hellmich, the author of, Healthy Food No More Costly Than Junk Food, Government Finds, states, “when considering portion size the ranking from least to most expensive is: grains, dairy, vegetables, fruit, protein and less healthy foods. In contrast to being healthy is cheaper the article, Can You Afford, points out, “americans consume 1,000 more calories per week that they did in 1985.” All together americans are eating more than we did before. Although it may seem like junk satisfies a hungry stomach, it doesn’t Junk food causes you to crave more junk food, meaning a high calorie intake with high-energy foods. Consumers eat only junk food end up buying and consuming more because they are so “cheap” they just keep buying more and more. Soon realizing their purchases of junk food will only last so long and not keep them healthy and end up back at the store again. The price of healthy and fresh produce is rising making it harder for the poor families to get the nutrition they need.
