Edgar Allan Poe’s stories will always be vastly relished. Born in Boston, Poe never really knew his parents. His father left early in his life and his mother died of tuberculosis when he was only three. He was separated from his sibling and sent to Richmond, Virginia to live with John and Frances Allan. John Allan was never supportive of his writings, but Poe never stopped. John Allan paid for Poe to go to college, however it wasn’t the full cost. Poe turned to gambling to try and cover the rest but quickly fell into debt. He and his foster father began to fight even more. After Frances died, John Allan and Poe briefly made peace. He sent Poe to West Point, where they fought even more. After Poe was kicked out, they cut all ties. He moved to …show more content…
In “The Masque of the Red Death”, the Prince Prospero takes his friends and hides away in a castle to escape this sickness. Poe writes, “…these retired to the deep seclusion of one of his many castellated abbeys.” He is stating that they are trying to run away from death, and the solution is to lock themselves up until the sickness is cured. They stay in there for days, weeks or maybe months to escape this thing they really don’t understand. In “Fall of the House of Usher”, it states that “His eyes were tortured by even taint light.” With this line, one has to infer and figure out on their own that this means he can’t go outside. Roderick Usher cannot go outside due to his illness. He is stuck in his house until death. “Berenice” is a story about family being isolated to their home due to sickness, like “Fall of the House of Usher”. It states that the narrator’s “…recollections of my earliest years are connected with this chamber.” This means that he has been stuck in the chamber as long as he could remember due to his illness. Poe’s story “Cask of Amontillado” also shows a setting of isolation. As Montresor leads Fortunato down, it says they “…stood together upon the damp ground of the catacombs…” Obviously, the catacombs are not a super popular place to go so they were all alone. Also, Montresor walls Fortunato in and leaves him there. Fortunato is all alone, dying in the catacombs, isolated. In his life, Poe did feel isolated. From his adopted father, the people of his cities, publishers, etc. So, why wouldn’t he write about it? It’s what he

In the end, death has the final word. In Edgar Allan Poe’s dark short story “The Masque of the Red Death,” Prince Prospero invites the remaining healthy members of a community to hide away in his quarantined castle while the outside is plagued by the personified Red Death. Once Death enters the castle, it leaves no survivors. In “The Masque of the Red Death” Poe often depicts his characters’ actions as insane, but seemingly normal and fails to recognize that they are ludicrous; he then rejects and contrasts the beliefs in the Bible, in order to arrive at an all encompassing theme of an absolutely ineludible death. Because Prince Prospero behaves strangely, Poe calls his mental health into question by manipulating polysyndeton that forces…
