The Persian Empire built monumental palaces with paintings depicting images of royalty and supernatural creatures. They used pillars as a support system which soon became a very popular architecture structural style. The Mauryan Empire also found great pride in the construction of their palaces. They used pillars adorned with golden vines and silver birds as support and the palaces were known for their remarkable workmanship. Both empires strived to have the most beautiful and elaborate palaces. One of the Mauryan empires most striking monuments was the Pillars of Dharma which consisted of stone, free standing pillars that were polished until they looked like metal. Pillars were an effective and dependable architectural structure that was used in both empires. The Persians used caves and carved out rock faces to build their royal tombs. Lavish paintings adorned the walls and ceilings of these tombs making them one of their most impressive structures. These royal tombs represented their belief in an afterlife. The Mauryans also cut caves to construct residences for monks and polished the interior until it shined.
