Have you ever had hope so much that it changed your life? What kind of hope do you believe in? Many use the expression “Hope is for suckers” but having hope can change the way people look at the world around them. It can open new doors and shine a light on the dark days. While Katy Perry and Emily Dickinson show this in their poems Firework and “Hope” is the thing with feathers which both share the common theme of hope, Dickinson uses the theme of losing oneself and using hope to find oneself again, whereas Perry puts off a, people should believe in themselves and never give up hope.

Perry states in the song, “After a hurricane come a rainbow” (Perry 1). This metaphor is referring to the rough times that people must endure throughout life. It connects with the theme because having faith that life will fix itself or get better will make life a more livable experience. Perry shows this by using a hurricane to inflict the image of something hurtful but then saying that while hurricanes can knock people down, a rainbow appears through the rubble to make the day brighter after the fact.
Towards the end of the song, Perry uses a simile and metaphor in the same sentence. In Perry’s song she says, “Like a lightning bolt, you heart will glow” (Perry 1). While the first part of the sentence is used as a simile by comparing a person to a lightning bolt, the second part of the sentence is a metaphor because a person’s heart cannot actually glow. Glow has a denotation of a light without a flame, while also having a connotation of an appearance. This compares to having confidence in oneself by following ones heart and making life better before other people’s
