In the following story I will be drawing a parallel between the poem “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou, and the upcoming Homecoming football game between Lane and Curie. In it I will be demonstrating why I believe that both lane and Curie are caged birds. My piece is titled “Escaping one's Cage”. Escaping One’s Cage. Before the game even began you could see the growing anxiety on the Lane Tech football team, they were about to go out representing their entire school, in front of an immense crowd in their own stadium.…

The theme that “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated.” is conveyed in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by numerous times where Ritie had a defeat but did not let it defeat her and she pushed on; by the end of the novel Ritie had many defeats in her life but she did not let them control her life, and she learned from them and moved on to the next thing in her life, while trying to remain somewhat positive. Each of the birds had a distinct characteristic which pertains to how each of the races lived. “ But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams his shadow shouts on a nightmare his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing”(Maya Angelou 27-31).This quote symbolizes the blacks who are enslaved , and stands on the path of fulfilling a dream because of their skin color. Although the speaker isn't stated in the poem. I think the speaker might be Dunbar himself, because Dunbar is a African American growing up in a time where Jim Crow laws, segregation, and inhumane treatment. Therefore, allowing the speaker to connect with the oppressed bird in the cage. Dunbar starts the poem out stating he knows what the caged bird feels in the first stanza then fill the lines with descriptions of a open landscape on a sunny day. But he doesn't say what the caged bird actually feels.…

Maya Angelou’s recount of her rape and premarital sex is the chief reason many have for challenging Caged Bird (Sova 211). Understandably, countless parents have taken offense to such mature subjects being taught to their children. One school challenged Angelou’s novel because they believed it “preaches bitterness and hatred against whites” (Sova 212). This interpretation is drawn from her several brutal encounters with racist whites. Caged Bird has also been challenged by parents who alleged it promotes lesbianism (Baldassarro).…

Paul Laurence Dunbar and Langston Hughes both speak very strongly and courageously about their feelings towards this topic. They spoke out against slavery and racism throughout America. In "Sympathy" by Laurence Dunbar she talks about how the victims felt trapped and how they aren't being treated the same and feel like complete outcasts. They have no where to go and are continuously beaten with hopes there will be signs of freedom and a brighter tomorrow. They dream one day to be set free from their bondage.…

Could you imagine your life without freedom you wouldn't be able to speak or write freely, even express yourself. It is for this reason that freedom matters, more so to those who have once been without. Poets have the ability and perception to capture the theme of freedom matters succinctly in their poems through the use of many aspects such as poetic elements, the metaphorical meaning and figurative language which also allows poets to exaggerate or alter specific linguistic points of interest. The three poems that I shall be looking at for this discourse is I know why the caged bird sings by Maya Angelou, Let America be America again with Langston Hughes and where the mind is without freedom by Rabindranath. I know why the caged bird sings…

Hayes uses imagery of physical structures and birds to represent the racial oppression while using juxtaposition and repetition to challenge white America. The physical structures of confinement are images of the oppressive power structure, and birds represent the vulnerability of African Americans. The opening lines of the poem trap the reader in, just like society has trapped African Americans: “I lock you in an American sonnet that is part prison,/Part panic closet, a little room in a house set aflame (Hayes 1-2) .” All of the places of confinement impose a feeling of fear.…
