Eric Garner was a forty-three-year-old black man who lived with his wife and six children in Staten Island, New York. For many, he was a regular friendly face they would pass on the sidewalk. Their upbringings were entirely different due to environmental, cultural, and social differences. Jyoti grew up in a conservative environment adorned with the rich culture of India. Whereas, Garner grew up in America, a more liberal country that is filled with a mix of international cultures. Their diverse experiences with crime reflect their geographical and cultural separation. However, they were similar in that they were both members of judicial systems that failed to offer the give proper citizen rights. Even though Jyoti was a victim of sexual violence, she was perceived by many government officials as the perpetrator in her own rape. This victim blaming also occurred in Garner case. Several members of power within America placed the cause of Garner’s death on Garner alone despite having evidence that clearly showed a police officer choking Garner minutes before his death.
