In the South they needed fast ways to move their cash crops around so that they got them sold and make money off of them so they needed a more quicker and easier way of it. The South had methods like steamboats and railroads to transport their good long distances than wagon and horses. The South focused on their railroads and the production of making them so that their agricultural products would make it to ocean or river points so that from their it gets shipped to the North or Europe. The South used more of freight movement for their products in bulk.(W. Bryan, Jr, 2001). In the North they had more of 90% skilled workers in the North so they were more advanced than the south in their transports. The North began to find cheaper ways to transportation by digging canals to connect to rivers to the west for selling and trading. There were over 3,000 canals providing with transportation to the west. (Campi,N.D). With the North having most of the skilled workers, this made the making and maintenance of the railroads more advances due to the North being the industry capital during this time. By the 1862 the North had 22,400 miles of railroads while the south only had 8,700.W. Bryan, Jr,
