Odessa and Toronto
“Everything is relative,” says an English proverb. People like comparing everything; usually it is what they see or face every day, for instance food, clothes, cars, weather, some events etc. On the other hand, trying to compare objects like countries or cities is much harder if you do not have a chance to visit or live there. Of course, comparing two cities from your native country is not tough, because in many cases they are similar. But what about two cities from different countries, continents with different histories, cultures and languages? Two such diverse cities are Odessa (Ukraine, Eastern Europe) and Toronto (Canada, North America). Odessa’s infrastructure is the weak point of the city, whereas Toronto’s infrastructure is modern in all aspects. Odessa does not have a subway because of catacombs and this is a big problem for the city with more than a million people. Furthermore, buses, trams and trolleybuses are old and uncomfortable especially in hot days of the summer. By contrast, Toronto has the TTC, which is very safe and comfortable even for people with disabilities. Roads are the second problem for the city near the sea, they are narrow and have a bad quality, so they must be fixed after every winter and the city does not have places for parking in the center because of an old city plan. Therefore, the city has huge traffic jams at rush hour. Toronto’s roads on the contrary have a better quality, designed for winter and wide enough for parked cars. Also, the presence of highways helps to avoid traffic jams. Odessa is a warm city and many people like wheeling; however, it does not have any bicycle roads and bicycle parkings like Toronto does. Therefore, cycling in Odessa is dangerous and fiddly. Thus, the infrastructure in Toronto differs greatly from Odessa in terms of comfort and
