The two versions of Much Ado About Nothing that I chose were the 1993 version, directed by Kenneth Branagh, and the 2012 version directed by Joss Whedon. The two interpretations were drastically different from one another, but I think that the 2012 version was the funniest. In the 1993 version, the director also plays the character of Benedick, and the play is interpreted as the expected period piece. Unlike the 2012 version; the 1993 version displays a more jovial atmosphere all throughout, but the happiness of the characters does little to make the play funny. The happy atmosphere is demonstrated by multiple scenes being interpreted as party and picnic scenes with many laughing people who are not mentioned in the script. An example of this is when Hero and Beatrice find out the prince is coming and they run off with dozens of other unnamed women laughing and screaming to pretty themselves for his arrival, while in the 2012 version the cousins simply continue to cook the dinner they were preparing when the news arrived.

When Leonato announces that he has received a ‘letter’ telling him the prince will be coming that night, he holds up his cell phone. Additionally, the acting as also much better in the 2012 version than it is in the 1993 adaptation. The characters seem to understand and believe what they are saying, whereas in the 1993 version the actors seem like they have no idea what they are saying, almost as though they are delivering lines in a language they don’t actually speak, and so the actors overcompensate by yelling their lines or delivering them with a distracting abundance of emotion that often doesn’t make sense with the meaning of the lines they are
