In "Mother," and "Queer" the main character is George Willard, who is a news reporter in the town of Winesburg. He lived with his mother and father who he did not have a great relationship with. They lived in a hotel that was not so attractive. George was looked upon by the towns people of Winesburg because they were able to express their complaints or feelings to George to post in the newspaper. George on the other hand was the opposite. He kept to himself.

Elizabeth Willard was the mother of George Willard. Elizabeth was a quiet, kept to herself type of women, very timid. She had no relationship with her husband Tom Willard. She hated him. Since she had no special relationship with Tom she wanted to make sure her son George did not as well. "The fact that the conversation between Tom Willard and his son had been rather quiet and natural, as though an understanding existed between them, maddened her. " Elizabeth would run in his room when he went off to work because that was as close she can feel her son. Since she was very timid around her son she was not able to express her feelings toward him. What she did enjoy is when George would come to her room and sit with her to stare outside the window and watch the neighbors. Since she was not who she wanted to be in life she did not want George to end up the way she was. "I will stab him," she said aloud. "He has chosen to be the voice of evil and I will kill him. When I have killed him something will snap within myself and I will die also. It will be a release for all of us." Once George

George was just trying to find himself in the world. Since not having a good relationship with his parents I am more than sure he wanted a better life for himself. Elmer doing what he did to George was not right at all. George stayed to himself and did not have any issues with anyone but Elmer viewed him as a kid who never knew what unhappiness
