Georgia Military College Judaism is a religion formed perhaps four-thousand years ago by a group of people called by God. These people called Hebrews, who considered to be “God’s Chosen People”, originated from the country Ur or otherwise known today as the Fertile Crescent in Mesopotamia. Originally, the Hebrews were known as a nomadic people who grazed their herds along the Fertile Crescent. Abraham, a wealthy leader of the group of the Hebrews, was called upon by God to travel to a new homeland where he would be the founder of a Great Nation. The two, Abraham and God, formed a covenant or a promise that God would bless Abraham’s people so long they obeyed and worshipped him. Eventually Abraham and his people found Canaan which was

Their religion is monotheistic although the Hebrew people were originally polytheistic turned monolatry then monotheistic as they are today. The God they worship is referred as Yaweh and believe in a coming Messiah who will create a kingdom of righteousness. Another Jewish belief, is the belief of the afterlife. Judaism has a Jewish calendar which dates certain important holidays for those of the Jewish Faith. Rosh Hashanah is their Jewish New Year which encourages self-examination and repentance that follows into Yom Kippur, otherwise known as the Day of Atonement. Another holiday they celebrate is called Passover as it celebrates the deliverance of the Hebrew people from Egypt. Shavuot celebrates the giving of the Torah to Moses and Sukkot is the harvest festival. Celebrations about being delivered from enemies are the Purim and the Hanukkah. The acceptance of youth into society are held when they become twelve or thirteen.
