The Greek polis and the Sumerian city-state were both equally important to the civilization that it belonged to. Although they both were essentially the same thing, both differed in its operation depending on the civilization it belonged to. A Greek polis differs from a Sumerian city-state because a Sumerian city-state had ziggurats, Sumerian city-states relied heavily on agriculture, and Sumerian city-states differed in how they were run. Greek polis gradually advanced during a period known as the Dark Age. However, by the 8th century B.C.E. it became to be known as a distinct and important establishment in Greek society.…

For example, building tactics differed greatly. The Egyptians used sleds to transport their major construction supplies because of the sandy landscape in the desert. Whereas, the Mayans were able to use wheels and other technology in the building of their community. Another key difference evidenced, is that in Chinese or Indian cultures a much more rigorous social structure, such as the caste system, is required than would be seen in a less densely populated area such as Oceania or used by the Olmec. Although these small differences may exist, the similarities between all of these civilizations is remarkable, especially when it is noted that there was…

The Paleolithic and Neolithic eras mark the beginnings of art, agriculture, and “civilized” society in humans. The Paleolithic era made up the first part of the Stone Age and lasted over two million years, and came to an end after the end of the last Ice Age. The humans living during this time lived primarily as hunter-gatherers and depended on the land for all resources. In a time prior to practices such as farming and domestication, the societies of this time lived off a combination of wild game and plants gathered from the forests.…

Both cultures have been influenced dramatically based upon their geographical makeup. Without their proximity to both their bodies of water I do not think they would have been the same culturally, politically, or their values. The Mediterranean Sea was what made it possible for Greece to be the power house it had become. The sea made travel to both trade and expand political conquests a reality. Everything around life in ancient Egypt was in direct relation to the Nile river.…

The µῦθος of Theseus and the Minotaur is alluded to near the start of Plato’s Phaedo by the character Phaedo (58 B-C) to initiate a parallel between the µῦθος itself and the teachings of the character Socrates in the pages that follow. As the discussion between Socrates and his companions continues up until his death, this parallel becomes ever more clear, and by the end of the Phaedo it is reasonable to interpret the µῦθος as an analogy for the transition from life to death, where Socrates is counterpart to the Minotaur and the mechanism for his death is analogous to Theseus. With regards to a comparison between Socrates and the Minotaur, this relationship can be perhaps accurately generalized as a comparison between any person and the Minotaur…

Homer’s epic poem, the Iliad, speaks about the great deeds of the Mycenaeans in the Trojan War. More specifically, it is about Achilles’ conflict with Agamemnon. The Greeks claimed to be heralded from Mycenaeans; this is definitely true. Mycenaeans were the earliest Greek-speaking peoples in the region, as opposed to the Minoans of Crete, and the civilizations from the Cyclades speaking their own languages. Homer was born into the Dark Age of Greece, a few hundred years after the bronze age Mycenaeans.…
