What interlocks all the short stories together most to me from the book Midwinterblood is the main characters Merle and Eric. In each story they meet each other in different ways having different names yet similar to their names from the first story. The book seems to be telling the story backwards from the future to a past life they have once lived before. Merle and Eric always meet in each story not knowing eachother but, then again they have met multiple times. An example of this is " David Thompson's daughter Merle has a favorite story, once that she never forgets as she grows up, about how a man called Erik, who she never met, saved her father, and gave him back to her" (Sedgwick 128).
