“Diversity: the art of thinking independently together.” Malcolm Forbes. The characters Charlotte, from Wonder, by R.J. Palacio and Rafe, from Middle School: the Worst Years of my Life, by James Patterson are extremely diverse characters. Rafe is a troublesome boy entering the sixth grade who is dishonest and breaks the rules. Charlotte, on the other hand, is an honest girl entering the fifth grade who follows the rules. A beginning reason why Rafe and Charlotte are different is the fact that Rafe is dishonest while Charlotte is honest. In Middle School: the Worst Years of my Life, Rafe got a detention and told his parents he never got one. Also, Rafe denied the fact that he stole pop from his dad. Rafe’s dad kept asking if he stole

As a small, scrawny, confused 8th grade boy, the transition from a coed middle school - Roger Ludlowe Middle School - to Fairfield Prep was an enormous step for me socially and academically. At that time in my life, I was unsure if Fairfield Prep was going to be a good fit for me: all I had ever heard about the school were glowing reports from my older sister's friends who attended. Fortunately, looking back at it, attending Fairfield Prep was one of the most impactful and beneficial decisions I have ever made for myself as it inspired me to be "open to growth". This institution has not only pushed me academically, but it allowed me to stretch my comfort-zone and become more comfortable with myself.…

Just about every year before school starts while my mom has meetings for teachers, my dad takes my sister and I on a small, five day trip to different places. This year, we decided to go to St Louis. Little did I know that this trip would soon turn south very, very, fast.…

For most students, the transition from middle school to high school is the evolution from childhood to adulthood. In my case, my middle school graduation was a quick transition for another reason. The first few months of my freshman year had my parents rushing my grandfather in and out of the hospital because of his failing heart. By this point my grandfather had battled off colon cancer, 3 heart attacks, and 2 open heart surgeries. At age 74 he was not a candidate for a heart transplant but he was able to get a defibrillator.…

There are some things that we want our dear teachers to know and some things we don’t. The top two things on that list that are pretty true for any middle schoolers. Number one, I did not fall of the chair to get attention. It can be pretty bad when you get laughed at by the class. But I only used this because it can happen for other things like getting yelled at by the teacher, falling on the wet floor, I can go on forever.…

Freshmen year was honestly pretty good I had a lot of friends and had a lot of fun in my classes with them, going into Brunswick High School I was a little bit nervous just the fact I would be at the bottom of the totem pole now and would possibly be picked on by the older kids but it turned out to be just a myth, but some of them were definitely scary looking. Some other things I was afraid of was what the class load would be like I didn't know exactly how much tougher it would be but it honestly wasn't to much tougher than middle school. The teachers here were fairly nice didn't have many problems with them but they did definitely hold your behavior to a higher standard. High school was a change from middle school definitely just because…

I never really paid any attention to the saying keep your friends close but your enemies closer, that was until middle school. I rode the bus everyday, and I made sure I made friends with the people on the bus realizing that I will be stuck with these guys for a while. That's always been my mentality just stay under the radar and survive, but in this case I wanted to see if maybe this time I could change, even turn over a new leaf. Nobody knew who I was, just a another student passing by in a school of fishes. Around the last quarter of 8th grade year, I went on the bus as usual, and said hello to my friends, but weirdly enough nobody said anything back, I felt as though I was in the twilight zone or something.…

“There are far better things ahead than any we leave behind.- C.S. Lewis” Fifth grade was a year of representing the lower school as the “seniors”. In lower school we had no freedom; we had to ask to go five feet away like Pre-K. Finally, in the small cafeteria which smelt like pasta all the time, we had to be quiet. Though in sixth grade we have more work, sixth grade is superior to fifth. In fifth grade, we were the top of the food chain of the lower school.…

It all started when I was in middle school, although its affected me my whole life. When I started growing up more than the rest of the students and not growing in a good way. I was gaining more and more weight, while everyone else was staying skinny. I was always the bigger person, always being called fat, slow, pig and other hurtful names. I just came to the fact of me being a bigger person.…

These past three years have been the longest and the shortest of my life. The seemingly endless homework, long term assignments, and Wednesdays that felt more like Mondays made it seem like middle school would never end. Each individual day felt it took forever, but somehow, I feel like three years have been compressed into three weeks. I remember the first thing anyone said to me at Bigelow. “Welcome to Mr. Spiegels homebase, where people jump out from behind windows and hide under recycling bins”.…
