Women’s role were very different compared to the men. During the 1950s, women were expected to do everything around the house, while men worked. Females were thought to clean the house, prepare coffee for the men before they woke up, and wait for the husband to come home from work. Before this, women were running industries while the men were off fighting WWII. Women were not happy with the lives they had to live because they had to relive the same day everyday.…
Through The Great Gatsby, “Our Deportment…”, and “Testimony Before Senate…”, the sources reveal that women still have less rights than men; thus, the sources demonstrate that gender roles have not changed because women still have low expectations for any possible achievement placed among them by our society. Women in the American society, overall, have low expectations for what they may be able to achieve in their life. In Source A, The Great Gatsby, women are even aware of what little they are expected to be capable to accomplishing. The quote, “She told me it was a girl… ‘Alright’… ‘that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool” (1.116-118), is expressing how aware Daisy is of what little her child will be expected…
My views of gender, in general, have been reshaped. The book, videos, and class discussions have contested many aspects of my everyday life and the video Tough Guize truly resonated with me. I am raising two young boys and am glad to be learning the concepts of patriarchy and the social differences between men and women. The topic of gender in this class has left me with many questions and concerns as they grow up to be older boys, teenagers, and adult. There is an element of despair that I have about the role that society plays in guiding gender.…
Manifest Destiny Through the eyes of Margaret Fuller and Henry David Thoreau Romanticism was a social reform movement that changed American society. The industrialization that occurred in the 1820s and 30s sparked this reformation of American individuality. During this period of evolution, certain individuals expanded both philosophically and geographically. With the world changing at such a fast pace, people were forced to adapt and embrace the unknown. This mentality was greatly adopted by Transcendentalists, who argued that society was corrupting one’s mentality, and that one should focus on nature and self-reliance.…
In “Men -- It’s in Their Nature”, Christina Hoff Sommers acknowledges that society pushes for gender equality and neutralizing gender roles, but she argues that each male has a neurological predisposition that cannot be changed. Sommers introduces her argument through diction with word choice that contributes a negative connotation as she represents society’s view on masculinity. The negative connotation of Sommers’s word choice generates a negative tone in the opening of her argument, but using humor, Sommers lightens this tone to become more humorous but still serious. Syntax is also used through the use of punctuation adding another element of humor to her argument. Sommers argues that human nature cannot be changed no matter how many people want it to and portrays her argument through her word choice, changes in tone, and her use of punctuation to express humor.…
Masculinity’s Crossroads The article “Guys vs. Men,” Dave Barry uses satire to explain the problems with masculinity and a new approach to how males should be classified and judged. The article “The Crisis of American Masculinity” by Eric Garland discusses his view of how the traditional image of manhood is dying in today’s society. Each of them give their opinions on what manhood is; the manner that society should treat males with, the importance of masculinity in males, and their opinion of the necessity of these masculine characteristics.…
For centuries, mankind has had a propensity to utilise the biological distinctions of the sexes in order to enforce a societal distinction between the sexes, which is known as gender. Gender, as the socially imposed division of the sexes, allowed societies to delineate certain characteristics to each of the sexes, and thus assign different roles, moral codes, and, in certain societies, thoughts and emotions to them. As such, the study of gender is of profound importance to the manner in which one reads and studies literature. For instance, the delineation of the sexes prior to the 19th century, women were educated to a lesser extent than men, having an education limited to that of moral virtues, modern languages, and societal accomplishments…
In today’s society, gender roles are less critical, but they definitely still exist and continue making an impact on everyday choices of an individual. “But the thing the theories do most of all is tell adults that the adult world in-which moms and dads still play by many of the old rules even as they question and fidget and chafe against them-is the way it’s supposed to be” (Pollitt 2). In agreement with Katha Pollitt, even though gender roles are considered to be immoral in some cases today, mothers and fathers continue to implement them into their children. The principle of gender roles has been discovered by unconsciousness that has been adopted into a philosophy that the world chooses to live…
“It is clear throughout the film that when difficult decisions must be made, they must be made by a man. This message, like the reassertions of feminine gender norms off the pitch and masculine norms on it, serves to undermine the progressive messages of the film.” (Abdel-Shehid 150.…
The moral philosophy of feminism is a big part of today's world socially. Women feel that they are not treated the same as men on a social level considering that men do not receive the same consequences that women do when they do not accept their traditional gender role. In “Feminist Criticism” an article by Lois Tyson from 2006, Tyson talks about what traditional gender roles are in today's society. She compares the ways in which men and women are seen in society and how women can be seen as “bad girls” meaning they don't accept their gender role. The traditional roles are seen as girls are emotional and weak while men are strong and rational.…
A woman now has the same opportunities as a man. The fact is that parents with the help of the media have influenced on how a man and a woman should behave. A comparison of both sexes in education, relationships, employment, pay, marriage, confidence and in sexual assault…
Joan Scott’s Gender and the Politics of History attempts to theorize gender and argues for its use as a category of analysis for both social and political history. Through discussions of language and meaning, Joan Scott challenges historians reconsider the way they think and write about gender. She aims to expand the historical definition of gender to include an understanding of the interrelationship of masculinity and femininity along with their relationship to social and political discourse. A major point within Scott’s discussion of gender history is her claim that the substitution of the term gender history for women’s history is politically motivated.…
The film is an art to be watched, which is not the lack of a variety of female image. But for thousands of years under the influence of male culture, women are the object because of the desire of men. The male culture has been as the center of the film system, however the location of women only for "being seen” and do not have independent spiritual personality. Fortunately, this phenomenon is gradually improving in the 21st century.…

Now let’s switch over to the sociological view and the sociological imagination of sexuality and gender. In The Way We Weren’t: The Myth and Reality of the “Traditional” Family we see how it begins by stating the stereotypes and the norms that an American family used to follow, by having the male be the one who worked and brought money into the family and the woman was the one who stayed home taking care of the children. This use to be the norm that society followed, making males the dominant working sex and female’s inferior by having them do house work and take care of children; but as the years progressed so did we. This has benefited society because not only has it created more jobs but also allowed women to run for office which before would have never even been asked…
