The audience gets a strong sense of Erin Brockovich’s character in the opening scene when Erin is in a job interview, where the screen changes from blank screen to filming Erin (Julia Roberts), where we see that she’s pretty and has poofy hair. As the man says, “Look…” a close-up is used to show how Erin’s expression instantly changed, therefore she knows the routine of job rejection. Afterwards a wide shot is used to establish how she is dressed (quite sluttish), which reflects on her life choices. In the shot, the audience establishes that the story takes place in the U.S, in the 1990s. While she’s smoking she is thinking of her options, since she didn’t get another job, therefore she is struggling financially.

Marilyn is made out to be a famous actress with the use of lighting and music when Marilyn arrives in England. The weather changed from dreary and depressing, to light and bright, and the music became very dramatic, orchestral music. When Marilyn entered the film set the audiences’ focus is kept on Marilyn with the use of a medium close-up, to show that she was wearing a long, sparkly, white dress, and the lighting which is mainly on Marilyn (Williams), where the background is much darker, therefore keeping the audiences’ focus on
