Despite this, they both had a significant impact on their respective societies beginning in the late 13th century. Both of these empires allowed for great amounts of religious tolerance, especially for their time period. Though diverse and living in separate communities speckled throughout Algeria, Mali, and Niger, the Tuareg are united by their shared language and proud history. One reason that Mali was a site of cultural exchange was because of its strategic placement. The Empire of Mali’s location was great for trade, especially the Trans-Saharan-Trade. Located along the upper Niger river around the southern Sahara, the gold and salt trade thrived.
