The various approaches to achieving social and civil rights were expressed by numerous writers in unit 4, however, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X are the chosen writers for this assignment. Martin Luther King Jr.’s approach was to gather a mass of people and to speak publicly as the voice of the people, with the outcome of peace and nonviolent. Malcolm X’s approach was to speak to the youth’s allowing them to choose by giving them choice from different ends of the spectrum. These two approaches were on opposite ends of the spectrum. Both obtaining merits and demerits for their approaches.

His gathering brought many people together. People from different faiths and color gathered to hear his speech. His gathering did put into place various actions as to what should be done going forth. The demerit to his approach was that it was his dream. Indeed, all dreams need an interpreter to make clarity of the beholder of the dream. To some people if the dream did not become a reality they might get anxious and eventually revert to violence, hence defeating the purpose of a peaceful gathering (Dream).
Malcolm X’s approach to achieving social and civil right was to plead to the youth. He wrote a speech specifically for the youth called, To Mississippi Youths. In this speech he gave options, not just a finger pointing speech. With his options he gave choices.
