It’s All In Your Mind, Or Perhaps Is It Not? The mental state of being of an individual is complex thing to comprehend, especially where one is mislead; such deceit can lead to the demise of both parties present. The fool of the event is left an emotional cut in their mental state since the said person is played by who they thought could be a trusted confidant; whether it’ll heal or not, it’s anyone guess. The short story entitled “Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe and William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth had corresponding characters that share similar fates that revolved around deception. The “fools” have died by the hands of they considered a friend. On the other hand, the offender feels the aftereffects of this emotional transgression in their conscience. As for both the perpetrator’s conscience, they have lost a part of their sanity. The unnamed man heard the heartbeat of the elderly he has killed “not in [his] ears, it was not just inside [his] head… [That he] was certain” the others hear it too (Poe). He became deranged due to this senseless murder. He picks up the sound of a heartbeat that others could not be privy to because it’s all in his head; his mind is playing games with him. Compared to hearing noises, Macbeth saw an apparition, specifically the ghost of Banquo, whom he has ordered death to come for. Macbeth is paranoid and is being haunted by the images his brain in portraying, thus him saying, “Avaunt, and quit my sight! Let the earth hide thee” (III.iv.113). Both the short story and play have homologous ideas on how a person’s conscience acts out after such a transgression. The way their guilt slowly consumes their whole-being, and later destroys them is a similarity between the texts. Apart from the wrongdoers, the victim’s share a harsher fate.
