Through the stories Lyddie and Spilled Water, both protagonists were faced with poor health and safety while working and unacceptable treatment of individual workers with compensation. Spilled water by Sally Grindley, and lyddie by Katherine Paterson. Through this essay, I will be explaining the protagonist’s difficult working conditions, and comparing and contrasting both accounts. Lyddie’s work place was situated in the U.S, 1800’s, and Spilled water just a few years ago in China, 2004. This was in the 1800th, and there were no labor laws. There is no certain age for a person to be working. At that time, Lyddie and her family have debts to pay off. In order for her family …show more content…
Wong has not paid the workers correctly, for instance keeping the workers to work longer and stay for the rest of the year, by keeping money from them. This puts them in a position, which they don't have money to leave town, and work until the next pay schedule As stated, “Well now, young lady, things are improving, definitely improving. Not up to scratch yet, a bit slow, but better. Just to show what a reasonable chap I am, I'm going to pay you half wages, even though you’re still in training. No overtime, mind that’s only for fully trained operatives, and there was your little bit of illness last Friday for which I’ve had to deduct an amount, and, as you are probably aware, I’ve charged you all for the wanton destruction of the company properly. Lastly, of repayment of the ferry fare, but I’m sure you’ll agree that I’ve been remarkably generous.” (Grindley Pg-176-177) This is an example when the boss has taken part of the wages. Not to mention that before hiring LSY to the factory, they have never listed that she would have partly of her wages to be taken away. We can also tell that this was the second time she received wages. Mr. Wong has to minimize her wages on her second payment? Instead of her second payment, why not the first payment. Even stated later on, “It's the extra money the Wang’s owe you, and I managed to extract some extra,’ she grinned. They were worried that your uncle might report them for employing underage children and other illegal working practices”. (Grindley Pg-221). We can tell that China at 2004 has established workers right and their compensation amount. This proves that China’s toy factory has not followed the laws. From employing underage workers, and abusing power by taking away wages from
