Visual Argument: Uncle Sam versus Lord Kitchener The Uncle Sam’s “I want you for U.S. Army” and Lord Kitchener’s “Your country needs you” propagandas both have some common goals as well as differences. While these two announcements were for two different countries, they both had the ultimate goal and purpose of recruiting soldiers for their countries in need of assistance during World War I. To say one is better than the other could potentially be caused due to a bias judgment of the viewer’s nationality and viewpoints. Lord Kitchener’s image shows the stern army officer. To the viewers, he is depicted with honor and the great duty he carried for his nation. Differently, Uncle Sam is seem as more of a symbol rather than an individual, therefore Uncle Sam contains a quality that could last forever. He is the name behind the American country. Lastly, the overall drawing and color scheme are very different. On Kitchener’s poster, the image is all black and white, with just the image of Kitchener and his officer’s cap. On the other hand, Uncle Sam’s poster is filled with colors as well as America’s flag color scheme worn by Uncle Sam. For a country in need of solders, Kitchener’s poster did not even show much patriotism in the poster; at least nowhere close to Uncle Sam’s who is dressed in the American colors. With the effective use of effective colors, use of personal engagement, and use of a nationwide known figure, the Uncle Sam poster seems to demonstrate a more effective visual argument. For the fact that it incorporated nationalism, patriotism, and personal engagement, the overall poster would create a more emotional impact on the viewers and persuade them to join the army for their country compared to Kitchener’s
