According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 20.2 million students were expected to pursue some type of post secondary education (Fast Facts). When students make the decision to attend college, they also need to consider a few other things. One major thing that a graduate must decide on is whether to live on campus, or commute. Each accommodation provides a different experience and has its own pros and cons. For example, the social life between the two is very different, and the lack of living with parents can provide an obstacle for some. Although they differentiate in many ways, there are also many aspects in which they are similar. Some of these include the quality of education and cost. When …show more content…
For example, the quality of education will remain the same no matter what route the student decides to take. In both scenarios, the student would attend the same classes and have the same amount of time with his/her professor(s). Study groups and extracurricular activities would also be available to a student whether or not that student lives on campus. A teen would also be paying about the same amount of money to live on campus, as he/she would be to live at home. Living on campus would require payment for room and board which would amount to an average of $10,000 (What’s the Price). That may seem like a lot but commuting requires about the same amount. A student living at home would still need to purchase his/her own food. Depending on what is bought, the price can be rather high. Since a student living at home needs to drive to and from his/her university, gas will have to be paid for. The price of gas varies from area to area, but depending on the distance of the university from the student’s house, can cost the student a large sum of money for the year. Some college campuses do not allow freshman living in a dorm to have cars on campus, thus saving gas money throughout the school year. Either way, the cost and level of education remain about the same when it comes to living in a dorm or at
