Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, at Sinking Spring Farm in Kentucky. His family moved to a farm in Knob Creek where he spent the earliest years of his life. Abraham and his sister Sarah attended classes in a log schoolhouse until 1816, when their father, Thomas Lincoln, decided to move to Indiana. He was encouraged to run for a position in the state legislature. He ran his campaign in 1832 but was defeated. In his precinct, however, he received 277 out of 300 votes. After his failed campaign, he entered into partnership with William F. Berry for a store in New Salem. The store was ultimately a failure, falling farther and farther into debt. In May 1833, Lincoln was appointed the new postmaster of New Salem. He prepared for his new career by studying diligently.
