Catton's analysis on the two generals focus on where they came from, the way they embodied life, and their beliefs of what human society needed. Lee was from Virginia; and in his background were family, culture, and tradition. He embodied the noblest elements of aristocratic ideal. He believed it was somehow of advantage to human society to have inequality in the social structure. To thousands of confederate soldiers Lee was considered a symbol of everything they were willing to die for. On the other hand, Grant was from the Western frontier, he grew up the hard way and embodied the eternal toughness. He stood for democracy just because he grew up in the middle of it and knew it worked. To Grant life was a competition.
