Compare And Contrast Laocoon And His Sons

Decent Essays
I like your response, I also preferred the sculpture of the Laocoon and His Sons maybe because I am a more visual person. The sculpture is just more vivid and emotional, the anguish in Laocoon face seeing his son dying and he cannot do anything about it because he himself will soon will suffer the same faith.

The sculpture Triad of King Mycerinus and Two Goddesses, which resides at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, was excavated from The Temple of Mycerinus in Giza and was created between 2548 - 2530 BCE, during the reign of Mycerinus. Made from greywacke, an incredibly coarse, dark sandstone, this sculpture uses variation in texture, incorrect scale, and line to draw attention to King Mycerinus in relation to the two divinities, and thus is an example of royalty as divinity. Overall, this sculpture depicts the goddess of the Hare Nome, the goddess Hathor, and the King Mycerinus (in that order from left to right), all carved from a single block of greywacke. Additionally, this is an example of a high relief sculpture, meaning that the sculpture is…

For my first journal, I choose “Hercules Upholding the Heavens” by artist Paul Manship. It is located in the sculpture courts in the fine arts museum of Houston. What initially attracted me to this piece of art was the sense of power it radiated. Growing up, Hercules has been one of my favorite Disney movies; so having the chance to see one of my biggest fascinations come to life before my eyes obviously sparked something in me. The sculpture itself portrays Hercules performing the eleventh of his twelve labors.…

These are shown in the same gallery to create the theme of the ancient Egyptians and how symbols and artwork were a big part of their culture. The portrait of Khafre Enthroned is similar to this sculpture because both men are seen as noble, and the texture shows how antique the artworks are. The difference between them is that the portrait of Khafre Enthroned is bigger in size and the stone is diorite. Unfortunately, The Haremhab as a Scribe of the King is not in the book but the sculpture interestingly represents something we should all live up to, which is wisdom and understanding. One quality that stands out is the key and the lock in front and back of Haremhab.…

It’s great how out there and chaotic a sculpture and look at first. But when you truly look and embrace what is or trying to said, you start to see a whole new piece of art. When you enhance your perception, open your mind, and make connections within the sculpture, then what once seems pointless or unappealing starts to make sense. In my eyes I perceive sculpture as the art form with the biggest “voice” and mystery behind the work.…

One example was the picture of Marilyn Monroe on the set of The Seven Year Itch. Unlike the other works of art we looked at, I had some background knowledge about this picture. Having seen the film and others with Monroe, I initially felt very comfortable expressing my view of the picture, mostly in the context of what Monroe was during that era and the scene in the film. Also, given how the demands of her career in Hollywood helped drive her to an early death, there was something nice about seeing her smile, as if it were a moment outside of all the problems her life had. I soon realized that no one else had seen the film or had that background information on Monroe and many took a much harsher star.…

Although Machiavelli and Socrates both lived during times of uncertainty, political fragmentation and violence, their philosophies about how the state should conduct itself are in direct contrast with one another. Machiavelli’s the Prince is founded on the principal that if a ruler wishes to maintain power, he should embody the ideology of pragmatism, while Socrates believes the state should follow him in his commitment to moral purity and justice. The inherent dissonance between these philosophies would lead Socrates to be unsupportive of Machiavelli’s concept of a prince, and consequently the political system Machiavelli would recommend he install, despite his apparent change in rhetoric from the Apology to the Crito. Throughout Plato’s interpretation…

The most fascinating thing about art is the difference and diversity between works of art. The drastic uniqueness of arts between periods is something that is interesting to look at because one gets to see how much changes can be made due to cultural influences and time. After visiting the Met and seeing the works of art in person, I have chosen the Statute of Dionysus Leaning On A Female Figure and the Standing Buddha Offering Protection to explore in depth. The Standing Buddha Offering Protection is an Indian sculpture made during the late 5th century. It is only 85.5cm tall and it is constructed out of red sandstone.…
