After watching an episode about Alfred Hitchcock’s version of Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl, it is clear that Hitchcock has chosen to slightly alter the portrayal of the characters from Roald Dahl’s short story. Watching the episode changed the way I perceive the characters a bit. However, the portrayal is also similar. For example Mary is still very kind hearted and docile in the beginning of the story. Mary also seems nonchalant mostly after she kills Patrick.…

Even though there are differences, most of the main points of the plot and the characters remain the same. For instance, Rainsford and Zaroff remain in both the written and the visual version of the story. Likewise, most of the events in the motion picture follow the events of the story. However, there are still differences including extra characters, and plot twists.…

In “The Landlady”, Billy Weaver is lured into a seemingly normal bed and breakfast by an old lady who, despite her gentle and unthreatening appearance, wants to kill him. It is a story about how those with cruel intent may take advantage of those who are innocent and naive. Although the book and the movie can be arguably similar if generalized, there are many differences that may change the way a reader/viewer may grasp the concept of the story. Since a movie and book cannot be exactly the same, the film version is bound to have things that differ from the text. One example of how the book develops the development of the story is with the setting.…

On the contrary, Roald Dahl uses familiarity to initiate suspense in ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’. For example, the quote of “warm and clean, the curtains draw”, a familiar setting of a loving home gives a comfortable feeling but at the same time, it makes the audience anticipate what is going to be the outcome of the story. The wording of “warm” makes it feel like a home full of love and tenderness, which makes it creepier to expect something to happen. In addition to that, this point can also be seen in the quote of “ran upstairs to the bedroom”. Running to our most comfortable place in the house when you’re upset is a common thing to do, which makes it even more eerie and horrifying.…
