Amanda Wilson Professor Leightenheimer English 1102-01 23 October 2017 Role and Pathos: How Eugene Debs Creates Relatability Crafting and reciting a speech can be an incredibly difficult requirement. The main difference between these and, for example, an essay, is that enunciation and delivery can make or break a speech. With this addition also comes extra importance on understanding and reading the responses of your audience to gauge effectiveness. Speeches need to have a form of an emotional pull to them, or else they sort of inadvertently transition to lectures rather than a form of persuasion. Actions can still be carried out in more logically oriented speeches, but that passion to push someone could be lost.…

Moral Lense Literary Analysis of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest The 1950s, the context of which One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a novel by Ken Kesey, was written, was called the Era of Conformity. During this time, the American social atmosphere was quiet conformed, in that everyone was expected to follow the same, set format of behavior in society, and the ones who stand out of being not the same would likely be “beaten down” by the social norms. In the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Kesey argues that it is immoral for society to simply push its beliefs onto the people who are deemed different, as it is unfair and could lead to destructive results. First of all, it is unjust for people who are deemed unalike from others in society…

How many public speeches have you heard? Since I was a kid, I have been a fan of great public figures making historical speeches, especially during a time of crisis. Notably, one of my favorite public speeches was given on April 3, 1968, by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., entitled, “I’ve Been to the Mountain Top”, which was the very last speech he gave and is considered an iconic moment in American history. Keep in mind, Dr. King was assassinated the following day. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech, motivated individuals and intensified their passion and hope for equality, in a room full of disadvantage African-Americans.…

On October 7, 1981 the president of Egypt was assassinated. Islamic extremists assassinated Anwar Sadat as he reviewed troops on the anniversary of the Yom Kippur war. We, as an individual have an important role in society. Each individual is like a piece of a puzzle, no piece is bigger or smaller. However each piece is necessary to complete the puzzle; or society. In the works, “A Quilt of a Country”, “Once Upon A time”, and “The Gettysburg Address”, Anna Quindlen, Nadine Gordimer, and Abraham Lincoln respectively convey the individual’s role in society through the use of rhetoric techniques. The authors use different types of rhetoric techniques, to convey their ideas, whether it’s through an analogy, or an ironic ending.…

Everything evolves over time and we manage to adapt to the change. For instance, technology has been around for many years and yet, to this day, it is still advancing in becoming faster and easier to use. Kenji Yoshino, a Yale Law School Professor, writes an essay called “Covering: The Hidden Assault on Our Civil Rights”, which talks about the personal costs of covering and how people too often sacrifice authenticity in the interest of assimilation. He also talks about how covering is a form of assimilation. The ability to cover and to be authentic to one's identity in a world where change is happening everyday is possible.…
