Once when I was a 6 I wanted the most just to ride a bike. But I was too small and couldn't keep my balance.I wanted to ride a bike so much that I would try over and over in a day and fall off multiple times injuring myself on 2 different occasions. But one day on a hot summer day I got a little farther than the other times and then a bit more and by the end of the day I couldn't even stop I had to jump off my bike just to get off, as my bike did not have any breaks and I was too small to stop with my feet. This act of just trying over and over to ride my bike showed so much determination it also showed how just with a little hard work and a little determination you can do anything. Two literary characters that showed this trait very well were the ira sniper from the short story ‘The Sniper’ and Mark Watney from The book The Martian. The ira sniper and Mark Watney both showed determination throughout their actions not to die in there both respectful situations whether that was on Mars for Mark Watney or Dublin, Ireland in 1922 for the ira sniper.

Mark watney showed a lot of determination on Mars thought his action to not die on Mars and to communicate to nasa to get off Mars. The first example of Mark Watney showing determination is when Mark

The Martian is more in line with the humanism of the Renaissance because of Mark Watney’s diverse studies. For example, as soon as the storm ends he is able to properly dress his wounds which means he has at least basic knowledge of first aid. Also, he is well studied in chemistry, which he applies to creating the water for drinking, agriculture, which he applies to cultivating the potatoes, mechanical engineering, which he applies to the rover and spaceship, and finally aeronautical engineering and physics which he uses for piloting the spacecraft and his suit when he releases the air. If he did not have fast knowledge for all of these specific fields he would have died, which in a sense is ‘bettering oneself’. Nick Watney is the perfect example…

Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.’” Being courageous doesn’t always mean succeeding. I can relate to Mark Watney’s character in “The Martian”. Watney, a botanist and engineer, is stranded on Mars after he is presumed dead by his teammates. I could relate to Watney’s strategy in solving problem after problem to survive. Planning and creativity were key as he developed a conducive atmosphere and grew potatoes to sustain himself. Similarly, in my research and engineering projects, I always aim to develop creative, efficient solutions using tools I have, like using an iPhone’s camera to measure eye-tracker latency.…
