The novel “In the Heat of the Night” by John Ball is written in great depth and supports most plots with a thought provoking ideas. It is a crime and mystery novel that is set back in the 1950’s. The setting of this book is in North Carolina’s city called Wells. In this novel, the story follows a black police officer who is trying to solve a crime in a town where most of the population is composed of Caucasians. This caucasian majority community is shown as racist towards African American individuals. In my comparison of the movie versus the book, I will be laying out all the differences.
The characters that the book portrayed differed from the movie greatly and this was mainly because the movie changed the character’s personality and introduced new people as well. My first statement is that Mr. Mantoli who is now Mr. Colbert in the movie runs a factory that is planning to open instead of in the book where Mr. Mantoli is running a music festival. This changes how the story comes across people because in the movie Mr. Colbert is planning to hire black people and pay them a very little amount. In the book Duena Mantoli shows love for Sam Wood in order to create some sort of romance in the novel which helps to build tension, and at the same time showing that Sam Wood is not an idiot as he was displayed in the movie. However in the movie, Duena does not exist which leaves a hole in the story leaving people who read the novel scratching their heads wondering what happened to Duena as she played a very important role in the developing of Sam Wood’s character towards the end of the story.
