Many schools in the United States have valedictorians; however, several people have different points of view on if schools these days should have valedictorians anymore. In “Best In Class” written by Margaret Talbot, the author’s use of evidence suggests that Talbot supports those who disagree with the naming of valedictorian by using persona and exaggeration. Just like everyone else.” This mantra from Margaret Mead is a somewhat humorous yet slightly satirical spin on how people tend to think of themselves as one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable human specimens. However, one English teacher from Wellesley High School takes this critique one step further with his polemic presentation at the school commencement. David McCullough, a Massachusetts English teacher, gave a seemingly somber sendoff to his graduates in 2012, with a speech that contained some unapologetically harsh sentiments.…

Kurt Vonnegut’s Reading, Boredom, Belonging, and Our Human Responsibility speech at Fredonia College reminds me of my pastor’s sermons, however without a religious aspect. Vonnegut advises this graduating class on how to be good people and lead good lives. The tone of this essay is patronizing, as it is expected for graduation speakers to be wise and impart wisdom into the new generation. This is why most graduation speeches are timeless, such as “This is Water” by David Foster Wallace. He begins the speech with a silly and seemingly dull piece of advice that he uses to start deeper discussion: “I suppose you will all want money and true love, among other things.…

As for artifacts, grades and test grades can be used as well as materials used in class that allow the honor students…
