Compare And Contrast Progressiveism And Imperialism

While the United States was hopping onto the Imperialism bandwagon with the rest of the world, the United States was also experiencing the reverse at home with the Progressive movement. That Progressive movement aimed to bring about change and having the government be the proper agency to correct social and economic issues of the country. Both eras, Imperialism and Progressive, happened during the same time, yet each had their own ideas which differed from the other. One of these differing ideas was on whose responsibility is it to help the poor. Society had different answers for whether it was the individuals, the government, or worlds responsibility to help the poor. Some in society believed it was the individuals responsibility to help the poor. However, society had different reasons and justifications for why it was the individuals’ responsibility. An example of society using Imperialism to answer the question with the world is when the U.S. enters a treaty with other countries to invest in railroads in China. By investing in railroads in China the economy in China can improve. With China’s improving economy and increased ability to trade, the situation for the poor improves as there is more jobs.
