Compare And Contrast I Hear America Singing And I Too

The poems “I Hear America Singing” by Walt Whitman and “I Too” written by Langston Hughes each express similar and different attitudes towards America. Both writers each have their own perceptions of America that they have written about in their poems.The attitude expressed in “I Hear America Singing” and “I Too” are both wanting equality along with the poem “I Too” wanting to end racism.

There are some major differences perceived in both these poems on the author’s perspective on America. One example is that in the poem “I Hear America Singing” is that Walt’s perspective on America is that everyone should be treated fairly. One way these poems are similar is that they both use imagery to help the reader be able to recognize their attitude towards America. One example from the poem written by Walt is “I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear, Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong”(Whitman 397). He is trying to say that we are all equal no matter what we do and he expresses this attitude throughout the entire poem. An example of imagery from the poem “I Too’ is “I am the darker brother”(Hughes 925). Langston’s perception on America is expressed through the use of his imagery. Another way both of these poems are similar to each other is some of the techniques each of them use to allow the reader to understand the attitude of the poems. One technique both poets use are repetition. An example is in “I Too” is when Hughes repeats the saying of “when company comes”(Hughes 925). Walt states “I Hear America Singing” is the repetition of the word “singing”(397). He uses the word singing in just about every line of writing. This technique used each of these poems allows there to be able to express a rhythm throughout both. All of these things relates to the Walt and Hughes attitudes towards
